Why Hire a Lactation Consultant?

Understanding Their Role and Benefits

If you’re expecting or recently welcomed a baby, you may be wondering: Should I hire a lactation consultant? Breastfeeding is a natural process, but that doesn’t mean it always comes easily. Many parents face challenges along the way, and a lactation consultant can provide expert guidance and support to help ensure a positive feeding experience for both you and your baby.

What Does a Lactation Consultant Do?

Lactation consultants are healthcare professionals trained to assist families with breastfeeding and chestfeeding. Their role extends beyond simply helping with a baby’s latch. They offer evidence-based guidance on:

  • Establishing breastfeeding and optimizing milk supply

  • Recognizing hunger cues and ensuring effective milk transfer

  • Identifying and addressing latch issues

  • Managing nipple pain, engorgement, and other common breastfeeding challenges

  • Creating a personalized feeding plan if supplementation is needed

  • Assessing infant oral anatomy and function (e.g., tongue or lip ties)

  • Supporting exclusive pumping or a combination of breastfeeding and pumping

Lactation consultants work in hospitals, clinics, and private practice settings. When working with The Confident Latch, our lactation consultants are available for in-home and virtual visits.
